Football

Football typically refers to a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each, where the objective is to score goals by getting a spherical ball into the opposing team’s net. The game is widely known for its global popularity, particularly in countries like Brazil, Germany, and Italy, and is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

While “football” can denote different forms of the sport depending on the region—such as American football, Australian rules football, or Canadian football—the term primarily signifies association football, known in the United States and Canada as “soccer.”

The sport is characterized by various rules, notably that players (except for the goalkeeper) may not use their hands or arms to play the ball; they advance the ball primarily through kicking or dribbling. Matches are typically played on a rectangular field with grass or artificial turf, with matches lasting 90 minutes, divided into two halves. Football is notable for its rich history, cultural significance, and the passion it generates among fans around the world.
